About the Association

SGFA, Swiss Genre Film Alliance, is a non-profit organization founded in 2025.

It brings together filmmakers, directors, screenwriters, technicians, producers, and enthusiasts who share a common belief: Swiss cinema must reflect the full richness and diversity of its creators including in popular and innovative genres.

Thriller, fantasy, horror, science fiction, comedy… genre films have played a major role in the history of cinema and continue to fill theaters around the world. Yet in Switzerland, they remain largely underrepresented in funding and distribution systems.

Our Mission

Our mission is to:

  • Support and promote Swiss genre cinema, from script to screen.
  • Advocate for better representation of genre films in both public and private funding schemes.
  • Create a supportive professional network for genre filmmakers, to share resources, experiences, and opportunities.
  • Raise awareness among the public and institutions about the cultural, artistic, and economic importance of genre cinema.

By bringing together a new generation of creators and engaging in dialogue with institutions, the SGFA works to give genre cinema the place it deserves within both the Swiss and international film landscape.

Our Demands

The SGFA advocates for greater recognition of genre cinema within Switzerland's support and funding systems.

Today, the vast majority of public funding is allocated to dramatic arthouse films, leaving little room for popular genres.

We demand:

  • Equal access to funding for genre projects (thriller, fantasy, horror, comedy, science fiction, etc.).
  • A more balanced distribution of funds: genre cinema accounts for the majority of international box office success and audience reach, and should therefore be supported accordingly.
  • Official recognition of genre cinema as a pillar of Swiss cultural creation, on equal footing with arthouse cinema.

Our goal is simple: to broaden the horizons of Swiss cinema and give it the means to shine both at home and abroad.
